Enterobious vermicularis is a pin worm. The eggs (60 micrometers x 27 micrometers) are ovoid but asymmetrically flat on one side. After hatching, both sexes of the adult worm are found in the infected intestine. The female worm measures 8 mm x 0.5mm; the male is smaller.

  • Pinworm infections:

    Are not seen in the US but are common in tropical countries

    Are urban diseases of crowded environments, especially among children

    Are more common in blacks than in whites

    Are spread by the oral-fecal route

    Rarely produce serious lesions
